Overview

Murchison Falls National Park is one of Uganda’s most iconic and diverse wildlife reserves, located in the northwest part of the country. It is Uganda’s largest national park and offers a unique combination of stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and exceptional wildlife viewing experiences. The park is particularly famous for its dramatic Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River plunges through a narrow gorge, creating one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.

Key Highlights of Murchison Falls National Park

1. Murchison Falls (The Falls Itself)

  • Murchison Falls is the park’s main attraction and one of the most visited natural landmarks in Uganda. The falls occur when the Victoria Nile River squeezes through a 7-meter wide gap in the rock before plunging 43 meters into the rocks below.
  • The sight and sound of the falls are truly mesmerizing, and visitors can take a boat ride to the base of the falls, hike to the top for incredible views, or simply enjoy the spectacle from designated viewpoints along the river.
  • Boat Safari: A popular way to experience the falls is by taking a boat safari on the Victoria Nile. The boat ride typically travels from the Paraa dock to the base of the falls, offering spectacular views of the surrounding scenery and wildlife.

2. Wildlife and Game Viewing

Murchison Falls National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, and it offers some of the best game-viewing experiences in Uganda. The park covers a variety of habitats, including savannah, woodland, riverine forests, and wetlands, each supporting different species.

  • The Big Five: Murchison Falls is one of the best places to see the Big Five in Uganda. The park is home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinoceroses (though rhinos are located in a separate conservation area, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary).
  • Giraffes: The park is also home to large populations of giraffes, and it’s one of the best places in Uganda to see these majestic creatures.
  • Antelopes: Various species of antelopes can be spotted in the park, including Ugandan kob, waterbuck, eland, and defassa waterbuck.
  • Birdwatching: Murchison Falls is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 450 species of birds recorded in the park. Notable species include the Shoebill stork, African fish eagle, kingfishers, and a variety of herons and egrets.
