7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb & 3 Days In Zanzibar

12 Days

Overview

This itinerary combines the experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with relaxation on the spice island. You will hike to the summit of this tallest freestanding mountain in the world in seven days and spend three days of leisure in Zanzibar. Machame route is among the popular routes after Marangu and it approaches the summit from the southwest and descends through the Mweka route. We have prepared a day-by-day itinerary for the 7-day Kilimanjaro climb through the Machame route.

Itinerary

• Elevation: 5,400ft – 9,400ft
• Distance: 11 km
• Hiking time: 5-7 hours
• Habitat: Rainforest
From your lodge in Moshi, you will be transferred to Machame Gate, a journey that will take you about 50 minutes. After passing the customs, we will now begin our trek on a trail up a ridge and continue through the rainforest. As you start the hike, the trail may be muddy. Therefore, the trekking poles and gaiters may be used to overcome the slippery.

• Elevation: 9,400ft – 12,500ft
• Distance: 5 km
• Hiking time: 4-6 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
After an energy-giving breakfast at Machame Camp, we trek out of the glades of the rainforest. We then continue ascending passing a little valley and we walk on a heather-covered ridge till its end. We continue with the route as it turns west onto a ridge until we arrive at Shira Camp. We now rest, dine, and sleep at Shira Camp.

• Elevation: 12,500ft – 13,000ft
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking time: 6-8 hours
• Habitat: Semi Desert
After breakfast, we trek from the Shira Plateau in the east direction, ascend on a ridge, and come to the junction towards the peak of Kibo. The direction changes to the southeast, and we continue towards the Lava Tower (Shark Tooth). As we trek further after the Lava Tower, we approach the second junction that leads us to the Arrow Glacier, which is at 16,000ft. We finally drop down to the Barranco Hut at (13,000ft). We will take some rest here, dine, and sleep overnight. We are almost at the same altitude as we started our day. This day helps you to get used to high altitude to maximize your summit success.

• Elevation: 13,00ft – 13,100ft
• Distance: 5 km
• Hiking time: 4-5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
We start our day with a hot breakfast after which, we will trek leaving Barranco and continue our trek on a steep ridge. We then trek past the Barranco Wall and finish our trek of the day at Karanga Valley Camp. We will spend the rest of the day hiking for short distances to acclimatize our bodies.

• Elevation: 13,100ft – 15,300ft
• Distance: 4 km
• Hiking time: 4-5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we trek from Karanga Camp passing the junction to the Mweka Trail, and then we continue to the Barafu Camp. At this point, we have completed the South Circuit. We will camp early at Barafu in preparation for the summit attempt that will start shortly at midnight.

• Elevation: 15,300ft – 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
• Distance: 5 km ascent/12 km descent
• Hiking time: 7-8 hours ascent/4-6 hours descent
• Habitat: Arctic
At around 2 a.m. we will proceed with the final ascent to the summit. We will trek past the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, then change our direction to the northwest towards Stella Point (18,600ft). At this point, our trek becomes very challenging physically and mentally. We will be taking frequent but short rests to gain energy to finish our trek. You will be rewarded with a wonderful sunrise as you hike through the snow towards the Uhuru Peak. You will finally be stepping on the roof of Africa.
We will enjoy some moments at the summit such as taking photos, and then start our descent to Mweka Hut. We will stop at Barafu Camp for lunch, and then continue to Mweka Camp, which is situated in the upper forest. We will enjoy our last dinner and overnight sleep at this camp.

• Elevation: 10,000ft – 5,400ft
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking time: 3-4 hours
• Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, we continue to trek downhill to the remaining part of the rainforest. We will walk down with the help of gaiters and trekking poles to loose gravel. After arriving at Mweka Gate, we collect our summit success certificates and continue our hike to the Mweka Village where a vehicle will be waiting for us. You will be transferred back to your lodge in Moshi. End of trek.
Upon arriving at your lodge, you will relax your body by soaking it up in a swimming pool or massaging it. You will eat dinner and sleep overnight.

After breakfast, your body will be ready for a flight to Zanzibar to relax after the summit’s success. You will be taken to the airport for your flight to Zanzibar. At Zanzibar, you will meet our guide waiting for you at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, and you will be taken to your hotel/resort.

Your feet are probably still tired of walking after hiking Kilimanjaro. You need some fresh air to chill and relax. If that is what you need, then Zanzibar is your perfect destination. You will spend three days on this idyllic island while exploring a lot of things. Here are some of the things to do on your three-day stay in Zanzibar:
Spice tour: Zanzibar is endowed with various spices grown by locals in plantations. A tour of the spice farm is exceptional and will end up with a spiced meal (spiced rice or pilau in Swahili).
Safari blue: A safari blue involves a boat trip to different parts of the Indian Ocean. You can embrace activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing among others.
Beach holidays: When it comes to beaches, Zanzibar hosts the finest beaches in the world. The beaches have white sand and turquoise water. You can enjoy several activities such as sunbathing, swimming, boat cruises, and many others while you are on your beach holiday.
Swimming with the dolphins and sea turtles: This is a fascinating experience to be done in various sites such as Mnemba Island, Wattaboni, Leven Bank, Kizimkazi, and many others.
Visit Stone Town and other historical sites: Take a walk through the streets of this historical town to observe various things including architecture and museums.
A lot of things can be done while staying in an accommodation in Zanzibar. If you need a guide, we may help you. If you can do this on your own we are proud and we hope you will enjoy the last part of your safari package.
