5 Days Rwanda Primates Safari & trekking

5 Days

Highlights: Primates tour with wild Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest

Overview

5 Days Rwanda Primates tour with wild Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest and mountain gorilla trekking tour in the wild to Volcanoes National Park. Fantastic tour choice exploring Rwanda’s best primate species and the genocide memorial sites setting off from Kigali.

The Murambi Genocide Memorial is one of Rwanda’s most poignant and important memorials, offering visitors a deeply moving opportunity to learn about the tragic events of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Located in the Southern Province of Rwanda, near the town of Gikongoro (now part of Nyamagabe District), it serves as both a memorial to those who lost their lives and a place for education, reflection, and healing.

Itinerary

You will be picked up by our company driver guide from either a hotel / Kigali International Airport for a transfer to Nyungwe Forest NP. En route, visit the king’s palace museum, Ethnographic museum and Murambi Genocide memorial among others. Later proceed with your drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park for check-in, dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Accommodation Options: Nyungwe Top View Hotel (Luxury), Chimpanzee Lodge (Mid-range), EAR Ken Barham guest house (Budget)

As early as 5am, you will be expected at the starting point for the chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest. You will receive a briefing ahead of your chimpanzee trek and after set out into the Nyungwe forest. This is a tropical forest and a home to the Rwanda chimpanzees and 13 other different primate species. You will spot several chimpanzees swinging from one tree branch to another. After the trek, you will exit the forest and head back to your hotel for a late breakfast or an early lunch.

After lunch, your driver guide will be waiting to take you on your next activity that is the canopy walk experience in Nyungwe forest national park. You will walk on this canopy bridge starting from the Uwinka visitor centre and get to view the forest from the top. You will later return to your hotel for dinner and another night in the Nyungwe forest.

Accommodation Options: Nyungwe Top View Hotel (Luxury), Chimpanzee Lodge (Mid-range), EAR Ken Barham guest house (Budget)

On waking up; have breakfast and later hit the road for your transfer to Volcanoes NP, northwest of Rwanda in Musanze province. En route enjoy the spectacular scenery views of the country side.

Accommodation Options: Virunga Inn resort & SPA (Luxury), Fatima Hotel (Mid-range), Virunga Homestay (Budget)

Have breakfast and head for the Kinigi Park offices by 7:00AM; just in time for the morning briefing on the code of conduct when trekking for the mountain gorillas. After locating the creatures, take clear observation of their behavior while taking photographs and videos for this wonderful encounter. Later retrieve the starting point; meet up your guide for a drive back to your lodge.

After Lunch, step out for a visit to the Iby’wacu Cultural Village (Gorilla guardian village) where you will learn more about the Rwandan cultural practices. Dinner and Overnight at your Hotel in Musanze

Accommodation Options: Virunga Inn resort & SPA (Luxury), Fatima Hotel (Mid-range), Virunga Homestay (Budget)

Today after breakfast, we transfer again to the briefing area but this time for golden monkey trekking. Golden monkeys are primates that reside in the Virunga regions of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. The golden monkey are generally more active than the gorillas. This requires that for great photos you will continuously follow them as they forage for food especially the delicious bamboo shoots.

Sometimes they are seen getting into the surrounding gardens for potatoes. However to note is that they are generally not located too far so the trek to their habitat is much more manageable than some of the gorilla families.

You will receive a briefing at the park headquarters before you start your golden monkey trek just like the previous day. You can carry packed lunch but usually the trek lasts a few minutes and you are able to return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch the driver guide will transfer you to Kigali to return to your hotel or take your flight home.
